THOSE ELUSIVE ORANGES.

My Goal in hybridising:

I would like to hybridise my own double orange....

just like Clementine below….. minus the quirks, plus the perfume…  so probably some of the cultivars below will help me achieve my goal….

On occasion Clementine keeps those skirts tucked up and then she looks totally different…but always the perfume is there…I sometimes feel like throwing her out and then she will put out the most perfect blooms...
left…..The colour changes according to the weather, sometimes the deepest orange and other times a buttery lemon and apricot.

Grasshopper's Choice.....on the right..

This is a special plant, it was chosen by a dear friend on the night that the single with the 10 petal tips flowered....
The colour in this Rosalla x American Pride cultivar is just what I am looking for.

It is showing promise, but the weather has stopped it from showing it's best..I'm hoping that Autumn will allow us to see it at it's finest.

Left…the cv has a strong marzipan perfume...

It has flowered again and it will be interesting to see how deep the orange gets now that the weather is cooler…..here it is yesterday..27th Feb 2014

 Today a little deeper..

The final colour, some of the flowers are single with petaloids in the throat, but most are doubles..
That marzipan perfume is really strong….
There is a pod on this bush, so I hope that it developes….no idea about the pollen donor..
April 10th....
The pod did ripen and I've sown a few seeds, there were about 50+ small seeds in the pod....
I've not left anything to chance this time and crossed it with Clementine..that's a double dose of marzipan and a deeper orange..

Below...One of it's flowers opened up with 10 petal tips, it was a single and very interesting..
It was so waxy and you can see the petaloids bunched up in it's throat.

This is the Grasshopper's Choice flower that I have crossed with Clementine pollen.....the pod has since developed and is becoming very large...
Unfortunately this pod was damaged by the wind, when it was near to being ripe. It was huge so it really had no hope against the strong winds. The seeds were white and I planted them just in case.
Four germinated, but only one survived and it's growing well. Sad to lose such a large pod..

Below…...Bucks Fizz aka Brilliant Orange is a reliable performer and that colour en masse is really very pretty..

Here it is with Pink Panther...they put on the same show every year..

Now 'WINTER FLAME'
Below……Langenbuscher Garten x Bergfeuer, this is a very attractive cv with flowers both in yellow and orange with long petal tips.

Left……LBG x B showing it's petaloids, all the singles have petaloids in their throats,
which looks promising for the next flush.

Here it is having it's 4th flush, a much prettier shape now...a remarkable colour too.

(Morgensonne x The Chief) x Bergkönigin, below.....
This is a puzzle, it hasn't decided what to do yet...next year for it....and it's sibling, which hasn't flowered yet..

2nd flush and it's much improved, in fact it's a very pretty little thing...
It's a butterscotch colour with a sweet perfume...

Now 'LITTLE NICKY'
Just maybe, The Dancer's little sibling might hold the key...It is such a neat shape and I certainly wouldn't mind a deep orange in this one..

  1. Hi Dianne, my name is Peter and I live in Adeliade, South Australia. I've been meaning to get into contact with you to speak about Brugmansia etc, specifically your lilac varieties and what Sanguinea/Vulcanicola species/hybrids you may have.

Could you please shoot me an email at peterantoniw@msn.com or respond here with yours so we could speak and possibly trade?
